Nydri Waterfalls

Lefkada has an abundant storage of underground water which is one of the principal reasons why a major part of the island is lush with greenery. The high mountains that abound in Lefkada are the sources for many a waterfalls that cascades through the mountainous terrain and finally ending up into the sea. One such gorgeous cascading waterfall is the Dimossari waterfall that can be found on the outskirts of Nydri. It ends up into a gorge which is replete with white rocks. The name Dimossari has derived from the word Dimos, which used to be the ancient state where numerous watermills were found. During the summer season, when the temperature gets really hot, tourists come to the Dimosari Waterfalls to relieve themselves from the sweltering heat and many of them can be seen swimming in the crystal clear waters of the lakes which can be found among the rocky contours. The trail on foot to the waters along the silhouette of the pine trees is splendid. Very near to the Dimossari Waterfalls is the seaside village of Nydri. Ideally a visit to the Dimossari waterfalls should coincide with a visit to this picturesque Lefkada village which is replete with quality hotels, restaurants and tavernas all geared up to pamper the discerning traveler.

Monastery Of Faneromeni

The Monastery of Panagia Faneromeni is the most important religious centre on the island of Lefkada. Located on a hill above the Town, this monastery gives gorgeous view to the capital village, the northern side of the island and the opposite coasts of the mainland. It is situated in the region of Frini and it is the saint protector of the island. According to the tradition, the monastery of Panagia Faneromeni was originally built in 1634 on the site of an ancient temple dedicated to Artemis, the goddess of hunting. On this site, the students of Apostle Paul had preached Christianity some centuries ago. In the Venetian times, particularly in the 18th century, the monastery was renovated, but unfortunately two fires burnt it down. In the late 19th century, the monastery was reconstructed again. Today, it hosts an interesting Ecclesiastical Museum with rare Byzantine icons, old manuscripts and gospels.

The road from Chora to the beautiful beach of Amousa is long but pleasant. The distance of 40 km will become a delightful journey amidst green surroundings and sea views. The last km of the drive is track road. After a 30 minute drive you will finally reach a small bay bordered with rocks. There, you will see the clearest waters and enjoy a refreshing swim. Sunbathing can be a little uncomfortable on the large smooth white pebbles but the natural beauty and charming atmosphere are enough to make you relax. This superb beach is popular with families.

Pefkoulia is an impressive large sandy beach located 10 km southwest of Lefkada Town ad close to the fishing village of Agios Nikitas. Considered as one of the best beaches of the island, the sea at Pefkoulia has a wonderful turquoise colour that attracts many visitors. Easily accessible and very popular, this beach can get overcrowded during summer. Some taverns can be found in the area.

Gialos is one of the longest beaches of Lefkada located 35 km southwest of the main town. It doesn't get that crowded like most of the beaches of the island but it is equally beautiful with unique features. Part of it is well-organized with sunbeds and umbrellas but there are also some spots that provide total privacy. The is accessed through a narrow road from Athani village. There is a parking area and a nice cafeteria with view to the Ionian Sea.

Kalamitsi is among the prettiest beaches of Lefkada located 15 km southwest of the main town. With brilliant crystal waters and white sand, Kalamitsi provides a perfect environment for swimming and sunbathing. Close to the seashore lie many rock formations and give a wild aspect to the beach. There are no sunbeds or umbrellas.
